Rory Block Escapes into Her Soul at Caffe Lena 9/17/24
By Don Wilcock
In the 42 years I’ve known Rory Block she has always been way ahead of the curve. From the first note I ever heard from her on acoustic blues guitar in 1972 she could match the prowess of the legendary delta blues artists she emulates including Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White – the list goes on. At a time when society not only considered women playing guitar to be an anomaly, but the idea that she was as good – or even better than – her mentors was too outrageous even to be considered.
Along with her friend Bonnie Raitt she has become a standard against which the women’s movement can be measured. She’s not just the best woman guitarist in traditional blues, but for my money she’s the best period. When I last saw her live in Valatie in 2023, she drove those old delta blues numbers home with a jack hammer intensity that took my breath away. At Caffe Lena Sunday night 8/17/24 she was no less intense, but mellower in her delivery.
Thematically, she has once again reinvented herself. On her just released album Positively 4th Street, she covers Dylan, and not just the heavy hitters of his career but some of his more obscure stuff like “Ring Those Bells” and “Mother of Muses.” And she doesn’t do it the way Betty LaVette does the Stones where you have to think twice about where you’ve heard any particular song before. Instead, she covers the song like she does on all her delta blues mentor records. She gets into these influences almost like she’s inhabiting their spirit, their lifeblood.
In delta blues, the guitar comes first. With Dylan the vocals are out in front, and the lyrics drive the delivery. Not that we always understand them, but they tend to define us as a society by osmosis. At this Caffe Lena performance she went back and forth between blues and whatever words you want to choose to describe what Dylan does.
Informal as a chance late afternoon visit with a friend, Rory’s show ran over by almost an hour. Like a kid in a candy store, she scrolled down a computer screen in front of her, cherry picking from a long list of songs. From her Positively 4th Street album she did the title cut, “Not Dark Yet” (“I was born here and will die here, too/It’s not dark but it’s getting there.”) and “A Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall.” Dylan songs not on the album included “Sweetheart Like You,” “Girl from The North Country,” “Sweetheart Like You,” and “Man in the Long Black Coat.”
Classic blues numbers included Son House’s signature song “Death Letter Blues” and “Country Farm,” “Frankie and Albert” by Mississippi John Hurt, “Crossroad Blues,” “Terraplane Blues” by Robert Johnson and Tommy Johnson’s “Canned Heat.” Rory originals included her best-known song “Lovin’ Whiskey” and “Mama’s Blues,” a melancholy number she wrote at age 24 riding on a train.
“Nothing Dylan ever does becomes less relevant,” she told her sell-out crowd. Neither does she.
POSITIVELY 4TH STREET
… a gripping journey that moves and touches… you rarely hear something like Rory Block’s version. Absolutely outstanding!
Cowboy Band / country.de
Bringing one’s own light to Bob’s repertoire is no mean feat; however, if anybody can perform miracles, it’s Rory Block.
Let It Rock
Rory’s most dramatic performance here - and, arguably ever.
Dennis Bozanski - Baltimore Blues Society
Rory Block enjoys a reputation as a brilliant interpreter of the blues… Block has done more to successfully promote the classic blues than just about any other single artist… Block brings out the blues influence on Blind Boy Grunt through her impassioned renditions of the material.
Pop Matters
Block has cut a wide swath during the past 40+ years in what could be called a one-woman quest for keeping the masters of the acoustic blues alive.
No Depression
Who else but Rory Block would be able to channel the raw essence of Bob Dylan, the soul of Bob Dylan… an amazing achievement that shines a spotlight on two American musical icons… inspired arrangements, stellar guitar work, deeply emotional vocals that grab at your heart and reach down into your soul. Truly inspired release that goes full circle for two iconic singer-songwriters, from the streets of Greenwich Village, thrust onto the world stage, blazing trails across the musical landscape that will have ever-lasting influences, award-winning artists whose popularity has criss-crossed decades and never waned.
John Muller - Blue Notes and Conversations
As she always does, Rory Block brings to this record the kind of vision that does much more than reflect back on the words of the most important and intellectual songwriter of the last six decades. A legacy herself, she provides guitar backup that translates her inspiration with the material into a work that once again proves her stature as one of the best traditional guitar players in blues or any genre.
Blues Music Magazine - Don Wilcock
While the songs herein are among Dylan’s finest, the adaptations and arrangements are 100% Rory Block… steeped in the blues... I love the way that Block arranges them into haunting Blues infused acoustic Folk songs that intrinsically become Rory Block songs, no more and no less… I will always have Rory Block’s fabulous re-inventions when I need something articulate and heartbreaking in my life.
The Rocking Magpie - UK
Block’s vocals are a perfect fit with Dylan’s tunes and her guitar playing, of course, is icing on the cake… Positively 4th Street – A Tribute To Bob Dylan- will satisfy Rory Block and Bob Dylan fans, and possibly steer a few newcomers to Dylan’s expansive music catalog in the process.
BluesBytes – Phoenix Blues Society
… deep feeling and loving enthusiasm… searing slide… Block highlights the blues that lie at the heart of Dylan’s songs, and honors the artistic roots that both share.
Melanie Young - Living Blues
Here, she turns her attention to Bob Dylan’s songbook, delivering nine fine covers that capture the spirit of the originals while adding something new.

Jimmy Leslie- Frets Editor at Guitar Player
“Contemporary Soul and Blues Songs Stripped Back to Bone and Gristle... Selecting a single Favorite Song is virtually impossible; as this is ‘all killer - no filler’ with not a single dud to be found anywhere... Rory Block’s arrangements here are magnificent...”
The Rocking Magpie- UK
I’ve seen Rory Block perform many times. I’ve listened to her albums even more. I’ve never ceased to be amazed at her talent... Those few paragraphs above don’t really do justice to this excellent Rory Block album. You know, “words can’t begin to describe,” and all that. The results are impressively imaginative, highly creative and, best of all, thoroughly enjoyable.
Jim White- Blues Roadhouse
“… an artist at the top of her game... an impassioned take on 11 songs... intense vocal deliveries that approach the level of a primal scream... Love Has No Pride is a mind-altering trip... Etta (James) and Block are sisters of another mother... (Rory Block) shares her emotions garnered from those intense memories on this incredible album”
Don Wilcock
Seven-time Blues Music Award winner Rory Block makes magic happen just by playing the songs she loves on her new album Ain’t Nobody Worried... Rory Block is the best there is at what she does and Ain’t Nobody Worried is the pure soul medicine so many of us need right now. Spin it once and let your healing begin.
Mike O’Cull- Rock and Blues Muse
"Rory Block is considered by many to be the finest acoustic blues interpreter alive today."
Mike O’Cull- Rock and Blues Muse
Anyone familiar with her long career knows that she has the musical genius to pull it off, and she does... Rory Block came up with a brilliant concept with Ain't Nobody Worried.

Block delivers the goods once again… She is a force to be reckoned with in acoustic blues. Here we have another super set of tunes that will garner all sorts of accolades because the work here deserves it. Kudos to Rory for another exceptional celebration of Women of Song.
Steve Jones- Crossroad Blues Society
AIN’T NOBODY WORRIED arrives like a box of firecrackers that immediately kick the insides into high gear in a way that only songs like this can really do… every song is a highlight, whether it’s the stunning “Fast Car” or early classic “Freight Train.” Everything is played with total sonic finesse…
Bill Bentley- Bentley’s Bandstand
“I’ll Take You There” soars to open, giving way to “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “My Guy” and “Fast Car.” Other pleasers include “Cried Like a Baby,” “I’d Rather Go Blind,” “Lovin’ Whiskey,” “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “You’ve Got a Friend” – all of which feature joy in every groove.
Chicago Blues Guide
There’s always a feeling of immense anticipation when Rory Block releases a new album. Her latest, Ain’t Nobody Worried, does not disappoint… Christmas came early, and this album is a forever celebration.
Parcbench
With more than three dozen albums spanning a 55-year career, Rory Block has certainly proved her proficiency as far as being a superb singer-songwriter and a multi-faceted musician… Ain’t Nobody Worried is a timeless tribute to some exceptional artists…
Lee Zimmerman- Living Blues Magazine
Opening with a masterful version of the Staples Singers' "I'll Take You There", this collection continues in gospel soul... which Rory herself provides with a confounding brilliance… superb rendering of the guitars… masterful versions of Koko Taylor's "Cry Like A Baby" and Elizabeth Cotton's "Freight Train" (with impeccable picking).
Paris Moves (translated from French)
An album full of a delicious magic, where Rory shows her most intimate facet but, at the same time, full of consistency giving the best of herself… Of course, Rory Block sounds as attractive and intense as usual.
